DESCRIPTION:

The design of medieval rowhouses was largely decided by one major factor - lack of available space. The land was valuable and to make use of every square foot, houses were bunched together with little space in between. Rowhouse lots were usually much deeper than they were wide, allowing for a small garden or yard in the back. The road frontage of the property on the ground floor was usually used to house some form of trade or shop. The space immediately behind was used as a living room, for storing materials, or as a counting house. Sleeping chambers called solar rooms were placed on the floors above. The rich built their houses in stone or brick; timber with wattle infill was used by the commoners. The kitchen was usually a separate structure located in the yard. Medieval sanitation was poor which contributed to their overall lack of good health. Garderobes or privies were built into the wall of the house. The rich had pipes to carry the waste into pits, commoners depended on chamber pots which were emptied into the street directly in front of the building.
